A creamy, cheesy baked potato dish perfect for family dinners or special occasions.

Ingredients

Potatoes

  • 4 cups potatoes (thinly sliced)
  • 3 tbsp butter (for cheese sauce)
  • 1.5 cups milk
  • 3 tbsp all-purpose flour (for roux)
  • 1.5 cups sharp cheddar cheese (grated, for sauce)
  • 0.5 cup cheese (cheddar or Gruyère, grated, for topping)
  • salt to taste salt
  • 0.5 cup green onions (optional, sliced for garnish)
  • 1 pinch optional cayenne pepper (optional, for extra heat)

Instructions 

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch dish.
  • Melt butter in a saucepan, whisk in flour, cook 1-2 min. Gradually add milk, simmer 5-7 min. Stir in cheese, season with salt and cayenne.
  • Layer half of potatoes in dish, pour half of cheese sauce. Repeat with remaining potatoes and sauce.
  • Sprinkle grated cheese on top. Cover with foil and bake 45 min. Uncover and bake 15-20 min until golden.
  • Rest 10-15 min. Garnish with green onions if desired before serving.

Notes

For extra flavor, add a pinch of nutmeg to the cheese sauce.
