A simple and hearty lasagna casserole that combines pasta, ground beef, and cheese for a comforting meal with minimal effort.

Ingredients

Pasta

  • 10 ounces campanelle (or another short pasta like penne, ziti, or medium shells)

Meat

  • 1 pound lean ground beef

Vegetables

  • ½ cup diced onion
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic (divided)

Seasonings

  • 1 teaspoon Italian Seasoning
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon pepper (divided)

Sauce & Liquids

  • 25 ounces marinara sauce (Mezzetta's Marinara recommended)
  • ¼ cup water

Cheese & Dairy

  • 1 cup part-skim ricotta cheese
  • 1 egg egg
  • 3 cups shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese
  • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

Herbs & Garnish

  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes (or 1 tablespoon fresh)
  • optional fresh basil (for garnish)

Instructions 

  • Cook pasta according to package instructions and drain.
  • Brown ground beef with half the garlic, onion, salt, and pepper; drain excess fat.
  • Mix marinara sauce, water, cooked beef, and remaining garlic in a bowl.
  • Combine ricotta, egg, Parmesan, parsley, and half the mozzarella in a separate bowl.
  • Layer pasta, meat sauce, and cheese mixture in a casserole dish; top with remaining mozzarella and Parmesan.

Notes

For a vegetarian version, substitute the ground beef with vegetables like zucchini or mushrooms.
