Homemade Spaghetti with Meat Sauce

A classic Italian-inspired dish featuring tender spaghetti topped with a rich, savory meat sauce.

Ingredients

Meat and Sauce

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (15 oz) tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for a little heat)
  • 1 teaspoon sugar (balances acidity)
  • to taste Salt and pepper
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • 1 bay leaf bay leaf

Pasta

  • 12 oz spaghetti
  • Water for boiling Water for boiling
  • 1 tablespoon salt (for boiling water)
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • as needed Fresh basil or parsley, chopped

Instructions 

  • Heat olive oil in a large skillet and cook the chopped onion and minced garlic until fragrant.
  • Add ground beef and cook until browned; then stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, herbs, sugar, salt, pepper, beef broth, and bay leaf. Simmer for 20-25 minutes.
  • Meanwhile, bring a large pot of water to a boil, add salt, and cook spaghetti until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  • Remove bay leaf from sauce, then serve sauce over cooked spaghetti, topped with grated Parmesan and chopped fresh herbs.

Notes

You can add a splash of red wine to the sauce for extra depth of flavor.
