1lbground beef
2tablespoonsolive oil
1smallonion, finely chopped
3clovesgarlic, minced
1can (28 oz)crushed tomatoes
1can (15 oz)tomato sauce
2tablespoonstomato paste
1teaspoondried oregano
1teaspoondried basil
½teaspoondried thyme
½teaspoonred pepper flakes (optional, for a little heat)
1teaspoonsugar (balances acidity)
to tasteSalt and pepper
½cupbeef broth
1bay leafbay leaf
Pasta
12ozspaghetti
Water for boilingWater for boiling
1tablespoonsalt (for boiling water)
¼cupgrated Parmesan cheese
as neededFresh basil or parsley, chopped
Instructions
Heat olive oil in a large skillet and cook the chopped onion and minced garlic until fragrant.
Add ground beef and cook until browned; then stir in crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, herbs, sugar, salt, pepper, beef broth, and bay leaf. Simmer for 20-25 minutes.
Meanwhile, bring a large pot of water to a boil, add salt, and cook spaghetti until al dente. Drain and set aside.
Remove bay leaf from sauce, then serve sauce over cooked spaghetti, topped with grated Parmesan and chopped fresh herbs.
Notes
You can add a splash of red wine to the sauce for extra depth of flavor.
