Ingredients

Base Layer

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

Apple Filling

  • 4 medium apples, peeled and diced
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch

Crisp Topping

  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed

Instructions 

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Mix flour, sugar, and salt; cut in butter until crumbly. Press into an 8x8 inch pan.
  • Toss apples with brown sugar, lemon juice, cinnamon, and cornstarch.
  • Spread apple mixture over base layer.
  • Combine topping ingredients; cut in butter until crumbly. Sprinkle over apples.
  • Bake for 35 minutes until golden brown.

Notes

For a crunchier topping, bake a few extra minutes until golden.
