A rich and creamy potato gratin with golden, bubbly top, perfect for comforting dinners or special occasions.

Ingredients

Potatoes

  • 4-5 medium Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes (about 2.5 lbs, peeled)
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • to taste Salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyere or sharp white cheddar cheese
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (for greasing)

Instructions 

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9x13 inch dish and thinly slice peeled potatoes. Rinse and dry slices thoroughly.
  • Simmer milk, cream, garlic, thyme, salt, and pepper until just simmering. Add potato slices and cook for 5-7 minutes until slightly softened.
  • Layer one-third of potatoes in dish, sprinkle with cheese. Repeat layers twice, then pour reserved cream evenly over.
  • Bake for 40-50 minutes until golden and tender. Rest for 10-15 minutes before serving.

Notes

Using a mandoline ensures even slices for perfect texture.
