A delicious fusion of apple crisp and cake, perfect for fall gatherings or cozy desserts.

Ingredients

Dry ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp allspice

Wet ingredients

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 1/4 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg, room temperature

Apple filling

  • 2 cups unsweetened applesauce
  • 2 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and diced (about 340g)
  • 2 tsp lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup granulated white sugar
  • 2 Tbsp cornstarch
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp salt

Topping

  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup old-fashioned oats
  • 1/2 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 Tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened

Instructions 

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Mix dry ingredients for the cake and set aside.
  • Cream butter and sugars, then add egg and vanilla. Combine with dry ingredients.
  • Mix apple filling ingredients and spread over batter in a baking dish.
  • Prepare topping by combining oats, flour, sugars, spices, salt, and butter. Sprinkle over apples.
  • Bake for 45 minutes until golden and bubbly. Serve warm.

Notes

Use fresh apples for best flavor and texture.
